Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 1/24/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Relationships of numbers…patterns have been our focus this week. We read the book, One Grain of Rice by Demi to help us understand the doubling of numbers. Students worked in groups and with partners to complete and create single and multi-step patterns. Then we graphed our data on line graphs. Don’t be surprised if your child offers to do the dishes for you soon…???
Reading: “How do things look from your point of view?” We explored point of view in fiction. We learned that there are various points of view and depending on who is telling the story, it affects our response as a reader. We learned that we empathize and learn more about the characters. These are the POV we learned about:
1st person: Told by one character in the book and we recognize by the use of “I” and “my.”
2nd Person: Narrator tells the story, and stops every once and awhile and addresses us as a reader
3rd Person Limited: Narrator tells the story, and allows us to hear the thoughts and feelings of one character (usually the main character) The narrator stays with that character throughout the book.
3rd Person Omniscient: Narrator tells the story, but allows us to hear the thoughts and feelings of a group of characters. The narrator can follow them throughout the story. We learned that Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library is told through this point of view.
We evaluated our books we are reading to discover through whose point of view the story is being told.
Science: What causes sound? How does sound travel? We began our exploration of sound by using tuning forks and making observations. We saw pepper dance and tuning forks vibrate. When the vibration stopped, so did the sound. Sound travels through the air in waves to our ears.
Social Studies: Pack your bags and book your flight! Each student chose a South American country to feature in his/her travel brochure. We shared most of these today. Classes did a wonderful job enticing their audience to want to visit those countries. Thanks for any outside help as some kids chose to bring in treats or make additional props for their projects.
Word Study: This week we continued Greek and Latin roots. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Tuesday night homework was a vocabulary sort and Wednesday night included playing the game, “I Have, Who Has”. Our spelling test and vocabulary quiz were today. Next week, we will feature another Greek and Latin root.
