Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 3/20/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: This week we reviewed the concepts of pi, circumference, diameter, and radius. We also multiplied mixed numbers. We were hoping to divide fractions, but that will start when we return from break. Students enjoyed our read aloud, Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi.
Reading: “How Are You Doing?” Students have been working hard, independently applying feedback they received on their summaries for non-fiction and fiction summaries, as well as character comparisons. I am proud of their improvements, and application of their learning!
Over break, I encourage students to read something they love, for the love of reading!! I will be excited to hear about their latest book!
We continue to read Rump, and find ourselves cheering him on in his journey to find the rest of his name, and therefore his destiny. Ask your child about what is happening in the book.
Science: We continue our exploration of Thermal Energy. We defined what thermal energy is, how it transfers, and the beginning understanding of “Conduction.” We also discovered that even though objects are the same temperature, they feel differently. We learned that conductors transfer thermal energy easily and quickly, whereas insulators slow down the transfer of thermal energy.
Social Studies: Exploring our choices of who to study next…we took time to brainstorm explorers! Students will study exploresr of the Western world and discover how they influenced our lives today. Most research will be done at school and will continue when we get back from break.
Word Study: This week we featured the root words, therm. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Classes continue to build their vocabulary. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.
Reminder:
Grades were posted last Friday (3/7). Please be sure to check Home Access for your child’s report.
