Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 3/14/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Happy Pi Day! 3.14 is Pi Day! We learned about pi, circumference, diameter, radius, fractional parts of a whole, angles, etc. We had fun learning and eating pie on pi day! Many thanks for families donating pies. We had a great time as we worked on these math concepts. Earlier in the week, we continued our fraction work. We now know how to multiply fractions. Next week, we will be dividing fractions.
Reading: We are writing non-fiction summaries. We have discovered that if we compile the main idea statements from throughout the article/book we read, they read as a summary.
We also reviewed fiction summaries. They also start with a main idea statement, followed by a sentence about the beginning, middle and end of the book. Summaries are short, about 5-6 sentences.
We also compared and contrasted how to write fiction and non-fiction summaries.
We continue to read Rump, and find ourselves cheering him on in his journey to find the rest of his name, and therefore his destiny. Ask your child about what is happening in the book.
Science: We are beginning our exploration of Thermal Energy. We defined what thermal energy is, how it transfers, and the beginning understanding of “Conduction.” Why do you feel cold when someone puts an ice cube on your back? Are they giving you “coldness”, or are they stealing thermal energy from you? How do you know? What’s the scientific proof?
Social Studies: Studies of the Natives in the Americas was our focus. We had an open note quiz this past Thursday. Students will get these quizzes back on Monday. Our next group we will study will be explorers and how they also helped shape our Western part of the world.
Word Study: This week we featured the root words, frail, fract, and frag. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Classes continue to build their vocabulary. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.
