Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 1/10/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: We have started working with fractions. Students are realizing the connection of division with fractions and the vocabulary that is used with these skills. Areas that we will focus on include: discovery of fractions as part of a whole, equivalent fractions, proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, and add/subtract/mult./div. fractions. Any extra skills at home to reinforce these areas would be helpful such as cooking with measuring cups, measuring distances with rulers or yardsticks and adding the measurements, etc. Everyday problem solving situations would be great!
Reading: It’s a Reading Celebration! We shared our reading from over break, and read together.
Science: Let the line talk! We graphed the sunrise and sunset times in Hilliard Ohio for the year 2014. Because Earth’s rotation is a predictable pattern, we are able to research these times before they happen. We discovered that line graphs show us change over time, and we were able to see how the length of day varies throughout the year. Next week, we will be analyzing these graphs more closely. We provided feedback to each other on our graphs by using a rubric to see if the graph ‘TALKS’ to its reader. (T-Type of graph is appropriate for the data, A-variables on correct axis, L-labeled correctly, K-Key concepts plotted correctly, S-scale is appropriate) We also reviewed our science tests from before break.
Social Studies: Students are publishing their own travel brochures. Students picked what South American countries they would like to learn more about. Each child will make a travel brochure about his/her findings and use persuasive language to entice their readers (including me) to want to visit that particular country. We hope to finish these next week and share.
Word Study: No word study this week due to short week. We will have a test next Friday, but we will start doing some other assignments in place of the Monday night parent activity and Tuesday night S.O.S.
(It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We continue to focus on word features and challenges appropriate for us. More and more students are choosing harder words and vocabulary. I appreciate their eagerness to challenge themselves.)
Upcoming events:
Band and Strings demonstrations will be January 14 in our classrooms…information will be sent home that day from the music dept.
Book orders due- January 24
Recorders will be needed for Music class beginning next week.
Interims will go home -January 17
Celebrations:
We hope all had a relaxing holiday break. We are proud of how well our students came back ready to learn again. They make us smile!
