What we have been up to…
Math: Students had a long division quiz using one digit divisors this past Tuesday, December 3. Most students performed well on this quiz. Any child receiving a 75% or less is asked to practice their facts and procedures. They have many examples to review in their Math Mania spiral notebooks. They were also to inform their parents about their performance and get a parent signature on the top of the quiz paper this week. I reviewed with those needing my help this week and I will work with students who need extra practice on Monday, Dec. 9 during the first part of their recess. Any extra math fact practice or additional problems at home would be great. Retakes for those scoring 75% or less will be on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Currently, we have moved on to long division with 2 digit divisors. Students are making progress, and we will continue to practice next week. Any extra support is appreciated.

Reading: “Words are Magical!” Words have the power to change us, and to affect how we react to what we read and hear. We discovered that authors choose their words carefully to evoke a response from their readers. We discussed metaphors, similes and personification as ways to affect readers. We also are learning how to chunk words to discover the meanings of words. We have learned some Latin Roots and will be learning how to piece chunks of words together to help us understand meaning.
Science: We are beginning to discover what causes seasons on earth. We have discovered that the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemispheres have opposite seasons. Earth is tilted 23.5º which means that sometimes the northern hemisphere will be tilting toward the sun, giving us summer, and sometimes the northern hemisphere is tilting away from the sun giving us winter. Next week we will go deeper into our exploration.
Social Studies: Our classes used Google Sky for the first time. We used this program in review with landforms and discovered various landforms located in South America. In addition, we celebrated our own traditions this week. It was fun devoting the late start day to cultural awareness, and we enjoyed the students sharing. Cards were made expressing Happy Holidays and were sent throughout places in the United States and other countries.
Word Study: Our feature this week was lesson 15…words from other countries. We enjoyed discovering how words originated from the various parts of the world and this tied in great when we shared about other places around the world this week. It is normal routine for us to have a pretest on Monday and words should come home that day. We continue to focus on word features and challenges appropriate for us. More and more students are choosing harder words and vocabulary. I appreciate their eagerness to challenge themselves.
Parent activity will be assigned on Monday for homework (choose 1) and S.O.S. (choose 1) on Tuesday evening. Tests will be on Fridays. Thanks for any support with these skills.
