Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Perimeter, Area, and Volume were our focus this week. The kids are grasping these concepts and the key vocabulary used. We will have a test on these concepts this coming Monday. Students have notes and examples to review for this. Students were also given an overall skills review sheet to do for homework this weekend. Please remind your child that he/she has this responsibility this weekend. Next week, we will be working on measurement conversions for standard and metric units such as 4 cups are in 1 quart, 200 cm in 2 m, etc.
Reading: We reviewed the power of inferring while we read, especially when we come across a text that may be hard to understand on the first read. Inferences take what the author states in the text and we combine it with what we think, and create a new idea or thought. We applied this strategy for the poem, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. Students were able to infer meaning from this complex poem.
We also began to gather information from a variety of resources to build vocabulary for our upcoming Life Science unit.
We began reading Under the Egg by Laura Marx Fitzgerald. The vocabulary is rich, so we are using context clues to guide our reading!
Science: We continued our learning about open and closed circuits this week, and students discovered why electrical cords have at least two prongs.
Social Studies: We took a break this week from social studies. Next week, we will complete timeline work using explorers’ expeditions.
Word Study: This week we featured the root word, socio. Your child brought home 10 words to study the spellings and meanings. Classes continue to build their vocabulary. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.
Reminders:
We know it is late in the year, but please check with your child that he/she has some notebook paper and pencils to make it through May. We appreciate this.
Upcoming events:
Recorders are needed for Music class.

To let you know…
Feras would love to hear from his classmates and their families. Please consider sending him a card, drawing, etc. Electronic cards can be created on the Children’s Hospital website free of charge. This would be a great way for us to show him we are thinking about him. Many thanks for your kindness.
Celebrations:
The entire school sang our Hilliard Crossing song this past Thursday. With the help of Mrs. Watkins, the words were composed by the students. After this special event, each student created his/her Hilliard Crossing logo. It was a fun and creative day!
