Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: What a crazy and inconsistent week! The kids have adjusted and made the most of it. We continued fraction practice and had a great time sharing our recipe projects today. Students experienced the real-world situation of how to double a recipe and cut it in half. Many thanks for help at home and the treats that were optional. Yum!
Reading: “The Heart of it All!!” We began reading non-fiction texts and determined the main ideas within the text and the supporting details from the text. We found that non-fiction texts often have more than one main idea. Each section of an article usually has a main idea of its own. Students worked in groups to determine the main ideas and evidence from various texts that were assigned. We also discussed that as we read non-fiction, we need to consider the point of view of the author. We need to consider what voices are not represented in the text so that we can be aware of biases. Knowing we read non-fiction to be informed, learn new ideas, and satisfy curiosities, we need to be careful we are getting a well-rounded picture to be truly informed.
We Can Interact With and find Feeling in non-fiction! We created tableaus about the text we read that got to the heart of the texts read. The students experienced the varying points of view about Christopher Columbus, Martin Luther King Jr. and Andrew Jackson. Check out my webpage for pictures of our tableaus. Each student was tapped and shared a comment about their role in the scene.
We are so excited about our new read aloud Rump-The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff. Check out the book trailer!

Science: We reviewed sound, and conducted experiments with tuning forks. We made sound waves visible in water and watched pepper dance. With the snow days and late starts, it’s been awhile! Sound is energy that travels in sound waves in all directions. Sound is caused by vibration. High pitches are faster vibrations and the waves are close together, and low pitches are slower vibrations with the waves being farther apart. Sound needs matter to travel through.
Social Studies: Due to the days off, we were behind sharing our brochure projects. The last couple of students went this week. We look forward to moving on in our Western Hemisphere studies.
Word Study: This week we continued Greek and Latin roots. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Our feature this week was “graph”.
Reminder:
Blizzard Bag Day 1 assignments are due Wednesday, February 19th. These are required by the state to make up a missed day of school so we don’t have days tacked on to the end of the year. Copies were offered to students if needed, otherwise these can be accessed on the school’s webpage.
