Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 4/11/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: We SHAPED UP! Using a variety of figures and shapes, we continued our geometry unit. We focused on using our math vocabulary, measuring angles with and without a protractor, using coordinate grids, and explaining characteristics of 2 and 3 dimensional figures. We will have a quiz next week on this unit. Next… moving on to measurement… conversions, area, perimeter, volume, etc.
Reading: Reading responses were due today. We finished reading Rump. Make sure to ask your child his/her favorite part of the novel.
We are determining the difference between right there and think and search questions and exploring how that helps us as a reader. We continue to read and respond like readers in our independent reading.
Science: We continued our study of Force and Motion. We discovered forces push or pull on objects. Different forces include gravity, friction, and air resistance.
We discovered that the greater the mass an object has, the less its motion is affected. An example would be a semi hitting a small car. The effect on the semi is very little and the car’s motion is greatly affected. We also learned that the greater the force, the greater the motion. If I kick a ball gently, its movement is less than if I applied more force and kicked a ball hard.
Social Studies: Time to EXPLORE! Students took us on a voyage as they presented their explorer projects. Classes did a great job presenting their information according to the given guidelines. The final products were impressive and very informative. The kids made wonderful connections why an explorer from the way past had an impact on us today. I was very proud of our students.
Word Study: This week we featured the root word, ject. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Classes continue to build their vocabulary. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.

To let you know…
Currently, Mrs. Davis has a class member undergoing chemotherapy. Feras Akileh has Ewing’s Sarcoma. Her homeroom has been a wonderful support system to Feras and his family. We wanted to make sure Mrs. Snyder’s class was also aware and encourage your child and families to send get well wishes, etc. to Feras.
In the hallway by Mrs. Davis’s classroom, there is a tub set aside to place pictures, cards, games, puzzles, word searches, notes, gift cards, etc. Feel free to also personally hand these to Mrs. Davis or place them in her mailbox in the office. We will be putting together a basket for Feras and his family to let them know we are thinking about them. Please show your support as he goes through this journey. Many thanks for your kindness.
Celebrations:
Thank you for outside recess!
Seriously…celebrate your child this weekend. They are very special to us also.
