Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 4/17/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: We continued with geometry concepts and had a quiz this week. Your child should bring this home today (4/17) and get it signed. I wanted all parents aware of their child’s progress. We also started order of operations. This has been difficult for some kids as they would rather be creative with their problem solving than follow a specific set of mandatory steps. Any extra help at home would be great. Please ask them about…Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally!
Reading: We celebrated the ending of Rump, by blogging our thoughts. I encourage you to check out our website to read our discussion.
We voted on our new read aloud, a mystery debut novel just released in March. Under the Egg by Laura Marx Fitzgerald. There is no book trailer for the book, so we decided to create our own when the book is finished. Stay tuned.
We continue to discuss comprehension strategies as we read, and have been revisiting the importance of inferring while reading by paying attention to small details the author provides.
Science: We began discovering what it takes for a light bulb to light. We were given the task of finding out what it takes by experimenting with a battery, a wire, and a light bulb. Students recorded successes and failures, evaluated them and discovered that there has to be a connection between positive and negative and that electrons have to have a place to enter and a different place to exit the light bulb. This creates a “closed circuit,” resulting in a lit bulb!
Social Studies: A few students presented their explorer projects this week. We were not able to get all done last week. I was proud of the kids’ efforts overall.
Word Study: This week we featured the root word, tract. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. Classes continue to build their vocabulary. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.

To let you know…
Feras has been communicating daily with Mrs. Davis. He misses school so much. He would love to hear from his classmates and their families. Please consider sending him a card, drawing, etc. Feras is currently in Children’s Hospital. The original plan was to have chemotherapy today (Thursday) and come home Tuesday of next week. Plans changed when he got a fever. He will now need a blood transfusion and has terrible headaches from a low hemoglobin count. Please continue to think about Feras and his family. Electronic cards can be created on the Children’s Hospital website free of charge. This would be a great way for us to show him we are thinking about him.
In the hallway by Mrs. Davis’s classroom, there is a tub set aside to place pictures, cards, games, puzzles, word searches, notes, gift cards, etc. Feel free to also personally hand these to Mrs. Davis or place them in her mailbox in the office. We will be putting together a basket for Feras and his family to let them know we are thinking about them. Please show your support as he goes through this journey. Many thanks for your kindness.
Celebrations:
Happy Spring! Enjoy traditions with your family.
