Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 2/13/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Make sure to ask your kids about the fraction activity they did using candy hearts. We had fun while incorporating several skills to practice such as equivalent fractions, sequencing fractions, placing fractions on a number line, and setting up data. Many thanks for any support you provided at home with the Blizzard Bag. We will continue fraction work that includes these skills and the assignment is due Feb. 19 or earlier. I have told the kids to hang in there as we build on these skills. I am available for any additional help with Blizzard Bag One work.
Reading: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” We enjoyed visiting the book fair to view new books!
We continue to explore non-fiction and finding the main ideas in non-fiction text, while supporting them with details/evidence from the text. We are discovering that each section of an article or book usually contains a main idea and that we can look to topic sentences to help us. We continue to consider author’s point of view in non-fiction, and the structure of the text.
We also continue to look for similes and metaphors in text and discover what is being compared, using context clues to discover the meanings of unknown words and inferencing.
We are so excited about our new read aloud Rump-The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff. Check out the book trailer!

Science: We continued our exploration of sound and discovered which type of matter sound travels through the easiest, discovered variables that affect pitch and what materials absorb and reflect sound.
Social Studies: Our next studies will be about the Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs. The classes do a great job researching information and participating in discussions about our topics. We use this subject as a great way to practice our informational writing and public speaking when we do many presentations involving Powerpoint, posters, etc.
Word Study: This week we featured the root word, ped. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. The classes are really building their vocabulary and applying their words in everyday conversations.
Reminder:
Blizzard Bag Day 1 assignments are due Wednesday, February 19th. These are required by the state to make up a missed day of school so we don’t have days tacked on to the end of the year. Copies were offered to students if needed, otherwise these can be accessed on the school’s webpage.
Upcoming events:
Recorders are needed for Music class
Friday, Feb. 14…No School….conference release day
Monday, Feb. 17…No School…Presidents’ Day
Friday, Feb. 21 End of second 12 weeks/Progress reports sent
next week (on-line)
Celebrations:
Many thanks for a great conference week. We enjoyed talking to you about your children and appreciate all the extra support at home.
We had a fun week with the Book Fair. Many thanks for supporting our school with this event.
And…last, but not least…we are thrilled that we had school for a full 4 days in a row! Have a safe and happy weekend.
