Snyder and Davis 5th Grade News… 2/21/14
Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
What we have been up to…
Math: Students have been continuing our fraction work…equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting like and unlike denominators, starting to use mixed numbers in concepts, and simplifying. Many are doing well with these skills. Those that are struggling, I will provide extra support at math time and during interventions on Mondays at recess. Algebra readiness packets were offered to students who are ready to be challenged more. All students were given an opportunity to take one if they wanted as to not exclude anyone from trying. This is for enriching students’ skills and the packet is completely optional. The due date is March 7. Other algebra work and numerous challenges will be provided next week and throughout the year.
Reading: The Heart of The Article…We continue our journey of supporting details and main ideas in non fiction texts. We are also continuing to pay attention to context clues to help us in finding the meanings of unknown words, and discussing the role and meanings of similes and metaphors in text.
We are so excited about our new read aloud Rump-The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff. We have created a “Rump Wall” that will showcase the imagery the author uses to create pictures in our mind, and quotes that we feel may be important later in the book.
Science: “You Light Up My Life…” We began our study of Light, building background knowledge to guide our discoveries next week.
Social Studies: The Aztec Empire is what we featured this week. We are building background knowledge on these people from long ago to help us understand their role in where we are today.
Word Study: This week we featured the root word, spec. Your child brought home 10 words to study their spellings and meanings. The classes are really building their vocabulary and applying their words in everyday conversations. Any extra support and practice at home is appreciated.
Reminder:
Blizzard Bag Day 1 assignments were due Wednesday, February 19th. These were required by the state to make up a missed day of school so we don’t have days tacked on to the end of the year. Copies were offered to students if needed, otherwise these packets can be accessed on the school’s webpage.
